HYDRA

favoured by artists with its unspoilt traditional architecture, reached its fame in 1821, when the captains and shipowners of Greece financed the independence fight of the Greek people. The houses belonging to those captains resemble museums and are worth a visit. For the discerning shopper, there is also a wide range of excellent boutiques, galleries and jewellery shops as well as inviting tanernas.

MONEMVASIA

 

(moni emvasis = one entrance). The medievai part is beautifully situated at the foot of a steep peninsula and has a number of remarkable churches (Christos Elkomenos 12th century) icons, frescos and fine Byzantine architecture, the fortress towers above the rock and the church of Aghia Sofia is perched on the edge of the cliff whereas the lower part consists of winding streets, tavernas, cafes, houses and churches.

POROS

offers a pretty view with its traditional houses clinging close together against the hill in contrast to the green expanses of lemon groves. Old style tavernas and inviting cafes as well as beautiful leatherware tempt the visitor. Only a taxi ride away is the Poseidon Tempe (600 B.C. famous for Demosthenes 322 B.C.)
